1958 - Donna Murphy will star in a new Broadway musical next year written by the best-selling author of "Beaches." The Two-time Tony Award winner will play two roles in "The People in the Picture," a young woman in pre-World War II Poland and a grandmother 40 years later. Story and lyrics are by Iris Rainer Dart, whose "Beaches" became a movie starring Bette Midler. Music is by Mike Stoller who scored "Smokey Joe's Cafe," and Artie Butler, who has worked with Barbra Streisand and Dionne Warwick. The Roundabout Theatre Company will produce the new musical. Previews begin April 1 at the American Airlines Theatre, with the official opening set for April 28.
Murphy won Tonys for "Passion" and "The King and I." Murphy is also known for her role as Anij, Captain Jean-Luc Picard's love interest, in Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) and her numerous stage roles in musical theatre. Also for her TV supporting role as the ex-wife of HACK in series starring David Morse and other series. Murphy has won two Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Musical for her roles in Passion as Fosca and in The King and I as Anna Leonowens. She received two more Tony Award nominations for Best Actress in a Musical for her performances in Wonderful Town as Ruth Sherwood and in Lovemusik as Lotte Lenya.
