On this day in 1896, singer Ruth Etting was born in smalltown Nebraska. She had more than 60 hit records in the 20's and early 30's, and her own radio show as late as 1947. The Doris Day/James Cagney movie titled after one of her hits Love Me or Leave Me is based on Etting's life. She died at age 81 Sept. 24 1978. Ruth Etting (November 23, 1897 — September 24, 1978) was an American singing star and actress of the 1920s and 1930s, who had over 60 hit recordings and worked in stage, radio, and film. Her signature tunes were "Shine On Harvest Moon", "Ten Cents a Dance", and "Love Me or Leave Me".
